WHAT WE DO

CaVCA exists to help people and places to thrive – focused on our communities along the North Yorkshire Coast and rural hinterland, we seek to work closely with local people, learning and working together to enable positive change for people and communities. By helping people to feel more engaged with and connected to the places around them, we can increase opportunities and improve lives. By helping to unlock community power we can make great things happen*

We work in collaboration with the people around us who make up our communities, whatever their place, purpose and background. Our work is open to all, by bringing together people with lived experiences from all backgrounds we can build collective understanding and kinder, more forgiving, communities. We seek to build alliances across all sectors and between different communities, focusing on what we have in common and valuing everyone’s contributions.

CaVCA provides high quality managed workspace, community facilities, social action support and from time to time, discrete community projects. We work in collaboration, building close and trusted relationships, and encourage the sharing of power.

SOME EXAMPLES OF WHERE WE’VE UNLEASHED COMMUNITY POWER!

The Hungate Centre

We were approached in 2019 by members of the community in Pickering and North Yorkshire County Council because the Royal Voluntary Service had closed the Hungate Centre and were planning to sell it on the open market.

The Centre had been funded and built by the Derby and Joan Club in the 1960s but because they were unincorporated and therefore unable to hold property the building was vested in the (W)RVS. The RVS were within their rights to sell the building.

However it was discovered that it was held under implied Trust, and therefore CaVCA with the support of the community applied to RVS to have the building and associated Trust transferred to us.

The power of the community campaign led to the building being ‘saved’ for the people of Pickering.

Street Rocks

About three years ago the climbing community came to the conclusion that the facilities available locally were insufficient to maximise the opportunities presented by indoor rock climbing.

With the support of CaVCA the community mobilised and actively participated in significant local consultation processes to raise the profile of climbing locally, took part in various publicity events including a 24 hour climbathon.

This successfully persuaded CaVCA trustees to invest in the expansion of its already successful climbing wall.

The power of the climbing community created Street Rocks.

Grow Scarborough

The power of one community grower has led to the growth of many many more and has stimulated conversations about food security, food waste and community supported agriculture.W Scarborough

From tiny seeds….having seen a Facebook post about a new community growing initiative, we contacted the poster to find out more.

Long story short, we offered the use of Our Back Garden at The Street to enable GROW Scarborough truly grow and become a community led food growing enterprise, encouraging and supporting more community gardens, educating local people about growing their own food, and providing home grown food for the Community Fridge.

The power of one community grower has led to the growth of many many more and has stimulated conversations about food security, food waste and community supported agriculture.
